New Registration Procedure

It's become evident that leaches think they have the right to simply register on this forum and get automatic access to the download system, so they spam, sometimes many registrations in defense of this "me me me" attitude they have. Where the hell did this "Every one owes 'me' something" attitude".

To combat this and make it more obvious that its futile to do this I've created a new member group specifically for new registrations.

How it works.

Guest will be able to view and search the download system as always. (This allows search engines to find them also)

Newly registered visitors will end up in the "New Members" group. All forums are moderated to the new members group, and those users have to have a certain number of posts to be able move into the normal "Members" group. While a user is part of the new members group they will have NO ACCESS to the download system. They will not even be able to see it. This should get the point across that if your not going to be a regular participant of this board you will not get access to the download section.

The same restrictions will apply to the other member groups on this board. You will have to be actively posting in the forums (spamming will get you demoted to the New Member group again or worse banned) to continue to access the downloads.

All requirements are subject to random change with no notice what so ever. It will just happen.

The only way around the restrictions is to request a premium account. All premium accounts are good for 5GB to 10GB of transfer and you will have 12 months to use it. Once you use your limit you have two options, purchase again or start posting till you have access. Reminder spamming will get you demoted or banned.

PBBans are morons when it comes to security

QUOTE (PBBans)

Aug 24, 2009 New hub profile has been mass sent to all streaming servers that were active. All servers are now offline and being prepared for shipping.

Admins can now remove the old ucon profile of pb_sv_uconadd 1 64.27.21.46 pbbanshub pbbanshub. For security reasons we asking admins remove this asap.

HEY DUMB ASSES!!! You just told those DOSing your site how to take over potentially ALL of your members servers. And here it is again for posterity as well as those who follow you on twitter.

You should have just used ucon to wipe the profile in the first place and hoped your admins believed in you enough to come back once the site was back up. Instead you had to insert rouge ucon settings that can't even be used yet.

And you wonder why any sane person would think the staff of PBBans are a bunch of incompetent morons.

I guess they broke there fingers packing up their servers for the move to their new colo, or they could have done a couple of google searches and found the following very sound advice .

QUOTE (http://nix101.com/category/antiddos/)

Ok, so you are under ddos attack. It has caused you much downtime and annoyance. You finally decided to go to a protected host or run your own server at a protected host. But you soon find out that the attacks are pretty big and require more advanced protection which costs significantly more then your basic protection at your new protected host. So you go the extra step and buy the advanced protection or even if you don’t and get it under control yourself. .

Now your site is back up, nothing more to worry about, you go and post some things on your site about the script kiddy ddoser and about how much of a loser he is and that you are now blocking his attacks so ha and that you are now protected against such attacks. Well this turns out not to be such a good idea because the attacker now gets friends on his side or builds his botnet stronger and is now able to bring your site back down again. It may not happen like this all the time but it does a lot. May not be the exact turn of events in every case but it all results to one thing – how you publicly handled the attacks.

Here are some tips on avoiding such things and avoiding future attackers who may be up for a challenge.

The first and foremost thing to do above all other is to not acknowledge the attacks at all. Do not make any posts on your site about ddos, even if you are explaining the recent down time. Attribute it to a server problem or network problem. If anyone on your site makes posts about ddos delete them immediately. Do not make any posts about going to a new protected hosting or now being ddos proof or ddos resistant. Post none of the sort. Of course it may be ok to acknowledge some things privately to your admins or trusted users but never ever post anything on your site about it.

If the attacker is harassing you via email or chat simply ignore him, do not even acknowledge his presence.

This is the absolute best way to handle the social side of ddos attacks. Nothing will make the attacker feel so stupid and mad. Yes he will be mad but it is a different kind of mad. Not like the mad he would be if you publicly challenged him or exchanged heated words with him. That type of mad would cause a new terrible resolve within the attacker to get your site down. The mad he gets from not even being noticed cuts him more deeply and at this point he will most likely deny to anyone that he ever attacked your site. He would probably say “If I attacked his site it would be down!” and so on.

So as you see there are differences in the kind of mad you can make them. When you do not acknowledge them and you ignore them they will eventually give up. If you taunt and challenge them they may never give up.

The big lesson here also applies to hacks and defacement of your site as well. If you fix things quickly and patch up the hole when you get back do the same as I explained to do against a ddos attacker.

Remember non-acknowledgement is the best payback against these guys and it will shorten the length of time you have to deal with them. No matter how mad it makes you, you just have to stick to it.

LinkedIn Profile Confirms Treyarch Working on Call of Duty 7

Confirming what we all could have seen coming about three Call of Duty's ago (in future years, all time will be measured in Call of Duty's), the LinkedIn profile for Treyarch senior animator David Kim shows "Call of Duty 7" listed in his experience -- meaning that, yes, Treyarch is already at work on the game that'll follow Modern Warfare 2.

This isn't exactly a shock, considering Activision Blizzard's strategy of releasing a new Call of Duty game every year (2009's being Modern Warfare 2), and the fact that the franchise has hot-potatoed between original creators Infinity Ward and Treyarch year to year (with Infinity Ward behind aforementioned Modern Warfare 2). So the thought of Treyarch already at work on the next CoD, probably to be launched in 2010, is not beyond the mind's ability to grasp.

It is/em interesting to note, though, that this does at least corroborate one part of the recent rumor that Call of Duty 7 might be set during the Vietnam War, or perhaps the Cold War in general. The rumor stated that Treyarch was already making the game, and according to an anonymous source, were busy trying to license Vietnam War-era music, in addition to Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music. While we now at least know the Treyarch part was correct, whether it'll be set in Vietnam (or Cuba, or Africa, or the Soviet Union, or all four, or somewhere else entirely) remains to be revealed. And Activision has a lot of time left to reveal it before the holiday season of 2010.

View the full article

We will soon be opening a section on our website to support PunkBuster™ for Battlefield Heroes™.

Since this sounds like it will be another browser based game it probably will not have the ability to host dedicated servers. We probably will not be opening a section on our site for it which makes it kinda pointless to integrate PunkBuster anti cheat in our opinions because most game companies are to lazy to even configure their own official servers to stream and maintain updated checks.

QUOTE (Even Balance @ July 17 2008)

id Software, Inc. has contracted with Even Balance, Inc. to integrate PunkBuster™ Anti-Cheat software into the upcoming, free-to-play, web browser based multiplayer game, QUAKE LIVE™. We will soon be opening a section on our website to support PunkBuster™ for QUAKE LIVE™.

Since this is a browser based game we may not add any sections to the website for this game. Stay posted though because if id Software includes a MOD API in the code there maybe a mod community for this game like all previous quake series games. Again another pointless integration in our opinions if you are not able to create your own dedicated servers.
